Application scenarios
Widely used in early devices such as televisions, DVD players, and game consoles. For example, many old-fashioned VCD and DVD players are equipped with S-terminal interfaces, which are used to connect to televisions that also have S-terminal interfaces to achieve relatively good video playback effects.
As S-terminals are mainly used for video signal transmission, they usually need to be used in conjunction with audio interfaces (such as the audio interface in AV interfaces) to fully output audio and video content. However, with the development of technology and the increasing popularity of higher quality interfaces such as HDMI, the application scope of S-terminals has greatly narrowed.

AV-S Terminal: Understanding the Past and Present of Video Signal Transmission
AV-S terminal is a connector used to connect video devices, typically found on older electronic devices such as televisions, recorders, DVD players, etc.

The full name of S terminal is S-Video, which refers to Separate Video, meaning to separate video signals. Unlike traditional composite video signals, the S terminal divides the video signal into luminance signal (Y) and chrominance signal (C) for separate transmission, providing higher quality video effects.

Advantages of AV-S terminals:

Clearer image: The S terminal can provide clearer and sharper images than composite video signals, as brightness and chromaticity signals are transmitted separately, avoiding mutual interference.
Brighter colors: The S terminal can restore more realistic colors because the chromaticity signal is transmitted independently and is not affected by the brightness signal.
More stable video transmission: The S terminal provides more stable video transmission, less susceptible to interference, and ensures the integrity of the video signal.

Now, the S terminal has been largely replaced by more advanced connection methods, such as:

HDMI: Provides the highest quality video and audio transmission, supporting multiple resolutions and formats.
DVI: mainly used for digital video transmission, supporting high-resolution and lossless compression.
DisplayPort: A more advanced digital video transmission interface than DVI, supporting higher bandwidth and resolution.

AV-S terminal was once a widely used video connection method, but now it has gradually been replaced by more advanced technology. Although it provides clearer images than composite video signals, its drawbacks also limit its development. Nowadays, digital interfaces such as HDMI, DVI, and DisplayPort have become mainstream video connection methods.
